Getting my site listed on the search engines
I had this question from a client of one of our web development partners last week.
“Hi Paul,
We’ve recently spent a considerable amount on having a new website designed. We expected to get a significant increase in enquiries once this website went live but we can’t even find ourselves on Google. Any ideas?”
Yes, lots!
I hear this sort of thing quite regularly. Here’s what to do.
Firstly, make sure you’re really not listed (or “indexed”) by typing your www address into the search box on Google. If you’re indexed, it will show a result.
If this returns no results, it means one of two things – either your site hasn’t been indexed or you’re blacklisted.
If your site is seen as trying to trick or spam the search engines, it may well have been blacklisted by the search engines. Make sure your site follows the Google guidelines – if it doesn’t, you have no chance of getting re-listed. If you need help, let us know. Once it does, if you contact us, we’ll see what we can do to help you through this minefield.
The other possibility is that it hasn’t yet been visited or indexed by the search engine spiders. This can take a number of weeks, especially if you have submitted your site to the search engine for indexing.
The best way to get your site indexed and appearing in the results is to gain a link from a respected and related site that is already indexed. Maybe ask your suppliers to link to you – if it helps you sell more, it should help them too! Identify quality sites to link to yours using a tool such as IBP (Internet Business Promoter). You can get a free trial of IBP9 here. Keep building link and add good content to your site, and you’ll soon be moving up the search engine rankings.

Need Fast, Easy and Low-cost Website Development?
One of the best ways to get listed highly is to produce clean website code, and have it hosted professionally on a reliable business server. In the past, this has meant going to a web designer and hoping that they will produce a site that meets your requirements and is cleanly coded.
There can be problems with this approach, of course. Not all web designers are equal, and it’s notoriously difficult to find a good one. Getting it wrong can be incredible expensive for you – understandably, most good web designers aren’t cheap.
However, if you own DreamWeaver software, there’s now a much cheaper and faster way to get your site up and running yourself, that requires far less technical knowledge.
WebAssist are a well established developer of DreamWeaver add-ons. They have some superb tried and tested add-ons, including SiteAssist. Webassist SiteAssist is a wizard that develops websites for you. You select your chosen template, style, font and so on and it goes away and builds your site.
If you’d like to see a sample, here’s a site we built in around 30 minutes using SiteAssist. We added the content in another 3 hours and the site ranks on page one of Google UK after just two weeks.
What’s even better is it’s really brilliant value at only $199 – that’s around £100 or less at today’s exchange rate!
SiteAssist comes highly recommended by us.
